Ryan has twice penned letters to KFC urging the company to implement PETA's recommended basic animal welfare standards. In 2003, he wrote to David Novak of Yum! Brands US, and to keep the pressure on in his home country he wrote to most KFCs in Canada in 2008, asking them to take the lead by implementing animal welfare changes for KFC suppliers that will stop the worst abuses of the millions of chickens raised and killed each year for their restaurants.
